Local business directories and the "near me" search

Most trade work is won within about 15 miles of home. Local business directories are how you make sure your name is in front of those customers at the exact moment they need you.

Why "local" beats "national"

A customer typing "emergency electrician near me" isn't comparing you against the whole country — they're comparing you against the handful of businesses Google thinks are relevant, close and trusted. That short list is largely built from local signals: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and consistent listings in local business directories.

Getting my local business listing right

  1. Name your town, not just your county. "Serving Leeds, Wetherby and Harrogate" outperforms "West Yorkshire".
  2. Set realistic service areas. Listing 40 towns dilutes relevance and wastes your diesel.
  3. Use a local phone presence. A mobile is fine; an 0800 number can weaken local signals.
  4. Keep opening hours accurate, including whether you genuinely do out-of-hours callouts.
  5. Add photos of local jobs. Real work in recognisable places builds trust fast.

The types of local directory that matter

Reviews are the local tiebreaker

Between two similar listings, the one with 40 recent reviews wins nearly every time. Ask for a review the day the job's signed off, while the customer's happy — a short text with a direct link converts far better than "leave us a review" on an invoice footer.

Check how you actually appear

Search your trade plus your town in an incognito window every month or so. Note who's in the map pack, what their review counts look like, and which directory pages rank on page one. Those directory pages are exactly the ones you should be listed on.
