What a free business directory actually does
A directory listing does two jobs. First, it's a shop window: customers browsing for a plumber in Doncaster can see your trade, your patch, your phone number and your reviews, then ring you directly. Second, it's a citation — a public mention of your business name, address and phone number that search engines use to confirm you're a real, local business.
The second job is the one most tradespeople underrate. Consistent citations across several directories are still one of the strongest signals behind Google's local map pack.
Free business listing vs paid lead sites
There's a big difference between a free business listing and a lead-generation site:
- Free directory — you're listed, customers contact you directly, you pay nothing and keep 100% of the job.
- Lead site — you pay per lead (often £15–£40 a pop), that lead goes to three or four other trades at the same time, and you're bidding against them on price.
Start with free listings everywhere you can. Only pay for leads once you've squeezed the free channels dry.
What a good free listing contains
- Exact business name — the same wording everywhere, no keyword stuffing.
- Town and postcode area — you don't need to publish your home address; a town plus postcode area is enough for local relevance.
- One clear phone number — the mobile you actually answer.
- Your trade and up to five service categories — be specific ("boiler servicing", "bathroom installs") rather than "general work".
- Service areas — the towns you'll genuinely travel to.
- Logo or a photo of your van — listings with an image get noticeably more clicks.
- Google review rating — social proof is the single biggest conversion lever on a directory card.
Red flags to avoid
- Directories that hide your phone number behind a paywall.
- Sites that take a commission on the job value.
- Link-farm directories with thousands of unrelated listings and no real traffic — they do nothing for you and can look spammy.
- Anything that auto-renews into a £30/month contract after a "free" trial.
Keep your details identical everywhere
This is called NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone). If you're "Dave's Plumbing Ltd" on one site, "Daves Plumbing" on another and "D Plumbing Services" on a third, search engines can't confidently link them together. Write your details down once and copy-paste them into every submission.
Get listed free on Job Snapper
