1. Google Business Profile first
Nothing else moves the needle as quickly. Claim it, verify it, fill it in completely. Full walkthrough here.
2. Bing Places and Apple Maps
Bing Places can import your Google data in a couple of clicks, and Apple Business Connect puts you on the default map app for every iPhone user. Both free, both ten minutes.
3. Core directory citations
Consistent name, town and phone across a handful of reputable directories confirms to search engines that you're a real local business. Work down the submission list — quality over quantity.
4. A website with real pages
A one-page site with a phone number won't rank. You need a page per service and a page per main town, each with genuine content:
- What the job involves and typical price ranges.
- How long it takes and what you need from the customer.
- Photos of your own work, not stock images.
- A clear next step — call, WhatsApp, or request a quote.
Make sure each page has a unique title tag and meta description, one H1, and loads fast on mobile.
5. Get indexed deliberately
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Submit your sitemap.xml.
- Check robots.txt isn't blocking anything.
- Use "Request indexing" for new pages rather than waiting.
6. Reviews and structured data
Ask for a Google review after every completed job. Add LocalBusiness schema to your website with your name, trade, phone, service areas and opening hours — it helps search engines and AI assistants read your details accurately.
7. Show up in AI search too
ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity increasingly answer "who should I call for a leaking radiator in Sheffield". They pull from directories, review platforms and clearly-written web pages. To be quotable:
- Write in clear question-and-answer format on your service pages.
- State facts plainly — trade, towns covered, certifications, response times.
- Keep your details identical across every listing so the models can reconcile them.
Realistic timeline
- Week 1 — Google, Bing, Apple, top five directories.
- Weeks 2–4 — remaining directories, review requests, first service pages.
- Months 2–3 — town pages, photos, steady reviews. Map pack movement usually starts here.
- Months 4–6 — organic rankings for "[trade] [town]" if you've kept it consistent.
Start with the free bit
Your free Job Snapper directory listing covers step 3 in two minutes — trade, town, services, contact details and Google rating, all indexed and linked to your own profile page.
